Timothy Conigrave was born in Melbourne in 1959 and graduated from NIDA in 1984. His plays include Blitz Kids, Thieving Boy, Beesting, Like Stars in My Hands and the project Soft Targets. His novel, Holding the Man, completed in 1994 was published posthumously in 1995 and has since been adapted to feature film by writer Tommy Murphy (whose stage play adaptation has been performed world wide) and director Neil Armfield. The much loved memoir won the United Nations Human Rights Award for Non-Fiction in 1995 and was listed as one of the “100 Favourite Australian Books” by the Australian Society of Authors in 2003. It has been an international best seller and was reprinted under the Popular Penguin imprint in 2009 and again in tandem with the release of the feature film in 2015. Holding the Man has never been out of print and has sold over eighty thousand copies.
